How do I read my electric meter?

Asked 2 years ago
Reading an electric meter is a straightforward process that can help you monitor your energy consumption. Most electric meters can be categorized into two types: analog and digital. For analog meters, you will see a series of dials, typically five, each representing a different digit in your electricity usage. The dials may turn in opposite directions, so it is important to read them carefully. Begin by noting the number on each dial, from left to right. If the pointer is between two numbers, record the lower number. If the pointer is directly on a number, check the next dial to the right. If that dial has not yet passed zero, record the lower number; if it has passed zero, then record the higher number. The reading is thus comprised of the individual digits from each dial. For digital meters, the process is much simpler. You will see a digital display showing your electricity usage directly in kilowatt-hours. This reading is straightforward as you simply read the numbers from the display. Regardless of the type of meter, it is a good practice to note the readings periodically to track your usage and compare any fluctuations month to month. Doing so can help you better understand your energy consumption habits.
