How Do I Open an Account with Fidelity Investments?

When you're ready to move beyond basic banking to investing or other money management accounts, you can open one with Fidelity Investments and put your money to work for you. How do you open an account with Fidelity Investments? You can learn more about the various accounts available and how each one performs by calling Fidelity Investments customer support and below are steps you can take.

Opening Your Own Fidelity Investments Account

First is deciding what type of account you want to open. The steps to open each account are similar, but knowing the type of account you want is vital.

Opening Your Account Online

You can open your Fidelity Investments account online by doing the following steps:

  1. Open Fidelity Investments in your browser.
  2. Click "Open an account" on the homepage.
  3. In the pop-up window, choose the type of account you want to open. Your options include but are not limited to a Roth account, a traditional IRA (individual retirement account), a roll-over account, a brokerage account or a cash management account.
  4. Click "Open Now" under the type of account you wish to open.
  5. Follow the on-screen prompts to answer questions about your financial situation and the type of investing you wish to do.
  6. If you're already a Fidelity Investment customer, click 'Yes" when prompted. This will help speed up the enrollment process since personally identifying information is already on file with the company, and certain information will automatically populate.
  7. If you're not a Fidelity customer, fill out the information as requested on the screen, such as full legal name, address, phone number, and employment status.
  8. Enter your bank account information for the transfers from your checking or savings to your retirement or investment account.
  9. Review all the information and confirm it's correct, then click "Open Account."
  10. A window will appear telling you the account is open and what your account number is. You can click "Next" to go to the next page to get your username and set your security questions.

Opening Your Account Through Your Employer

If your employer offers a 401(k) or other investment retirement plan through Fidelity Investments, you can sign up for an account through the payroll department of your employer. Follow these steps:

  1. Contact your company's human resources (HR) or payroll department.
  2. Fill out the forms provided and submit them as instructed.
  3. Designate how much of your pay you want to be deducted each pay period for your Fidelity Investments account.
  4. Ask your employer if the company matches employee contributions and how much the match will be. For example, some companies match up to five percent of the employee's contribution.

Investing your money today can help safeguard your retirement years. For more information or assistance with opening an account, contact Fidelity Investments customer service.

Why does GetHuman Write How-to Guides for Fidelity Investments Problems?

GetHuman has been working for over 10 years on sourcing information about big organizations like Comcast in order to help customers resolve customer service issues faster. We started with contact information and fastest ways to reach a human at big companies. Particularly ones with slow or complicated IVR or phone menu systems. Or companies that have self-serve help forums instead of a customer service department. From there, we realized that consumers still needed more detailed help solving the most common problems, so we expanded to this set of guides, which grows every day. And if you spot any issues with our What do I do if my Xfinity TV or internet is out? guide, please let us know by sending us feedback. We want to be as helpful as possible. If you appreciated this guide, please share it with your favorite people. Our free information and tools is powered by you, the customer. The more people that use it, the better it gets.
