Citigroup is a consumer and commercial banking services provider that has operations in many countries. It was formed in 1998 in a merger between Citicorp and Traveler's Group. Naturally, it offers checking, savings and credit cards. So what do you do if you need to close one of these accounts? This guide will show you how.

Close Checking or Savings

If you need to close a checking or savings account, chances are it needs to be at a zero balance. You either need to transfer the money ahead of time into a different account, or withdraw it. What you choose depends on how much funds is in the account. Citigroup is going to want to help you, so you can call Citigroup Checking Account customer service or visit a branch to close your account. Keep in mind they will try to keep you at their bank because that is part of their process. Many banks do this in case of a dispute and they want to resolve the reason you want to close the account.

Credit Cards

Credit Cards for the most part, cannot have a balance due at the time of closing, so it's best to pay your credit card off and then contact Citi to confirm this, if you wish. Keep in mind that you cannot close a credit card at a local Citi branch. You would need to call Citi's Credit Card customer service. Keep in mind as well that if you should ever want to reopen your closed credit card, you would need to call Citi to review your request.
