How Do I Add My KTN to My Ticket on Alaska Air?

Travelling by air is getting more and more dangerous due to terrorist attacks. On the other hand, the Travel and Safety Authority (TSA) has come up with a way to make travelling by air a lot safer than it previously was.

The way they are doing so is with the use of a Known Traveler Number (KTN). The Known Travel Number is the number assigned to you once you become a TSA Precheck member.

The TSA Precheck is a process by which airlines conduct background checks to ensure that any member of the program is prescreened before going to the airport. Once Homeland Security performs a check and finds you eligible for the program, they will assign you a KTN.

The background check is as stringent as can be and is updated as often as possible. However, the membership to the program has to be renewed every year for about $85.

The benefits of being a member of the program are tremendous. The long lines at the security counter at the airport can be cumbersome and frustrating.

There is a specific Precheck lane at American airports that allows you to avoid the unnecessary airport queues. Walking through airport security while others are removing their clothes, shoes, belts, electronics and liquids save a lot of time and hassle.

You cannot use another person's Precheck Known Traveler Number under any circumstances. The only exception is that passengers that are 12 years old or younger can use the Precheck lane when they are with a parent or guardian who has a KTN.

Signing up for the KTN is a simple process anyone can do on the Homeland or TSA websites. However, certain people may be designated a KTN for special flights.

Just because you are a Precheck member with a KTN does not mean that you will automatically get expedited screening every time you are in an American airport. The program includes random checks for Precheck lanes but it is usually very rare.

In some cases, there may not be a Precheck lane meaning you will have to go through the regular security check. Precheck is available for domestic flights and international flights originating from the United States.

If you want to be in the Precheck lane at an American airport, you should ensure that your ticket includes your KTN number. If so, you may be part of the program but may not enjoy its perks.

Adding KTN to Alaska Air Ticket

You have two options of adding your KTN as far as your Alaska Air ticket is concerned. The first is the most convenient one.

It is convenient because it allows you to add your KTN to you Alaska Air account profile so it is in every ticket you buy. You can do so through the following process:

1. Launch your web browser and open Alaskaair.com
2. Sign in to your account.
3. Open your profile.
4. On the left side of the main account page, click on the ‘Traveler Profiles' link.
5. On the Traveler profiles page, click the ‘Edit my Information' link.
6. Scroll to the Known Traveler Number field and type it.
7. Click ‘Save.'

The other option involves making changes to your reservation. The process is as follows:

1. Launch your web browser and open alaskaair.com.
2. Click ‘Manage' from the main tabs at the top of the homepage.
3. On the ‘Manage Reservations' page, input either your last name or confirmation code or e-ticket number and then click ‘Continue.'
4. Scroll to the empty KTN field ant type it.
5. Click ‘Save Changes' and proceed to print your ticket.
