When calling this number, it's important to note that this number is not meant to connect you with a live customer support agent. This number is actually the Maryland Unemployment Office's line for its Interactive Voice Response system, or IVR. This number does have some use if you've already filed for unemployment in the state of Maryland, as it allows you to file your weekly benefit claim, check the status of your claim or reset your PIN to access your account.
It's also important to remember that this number is only meant to be used by Maryland unemployment claimants in the Baltimore area. Maryland has a second number for those outside the Baltimore area code but located elsewhere in Maryland: 800-827-4839. The system does not appear to block those people who aren't dialing from a Baltimore area code, so it's unclear if that's a hard limit.
If you don't already have an account with the state of Maryland's unemployment office, this number offers no benefit to you. You can't use it to reach an agent or another live person, and you can't use it to get very far with the IVR. When I called this number, I was given the options of asking a question about a claim I'd filed, filing a new claim, getting payment information or filing my certification of my existing claim.
As none applied to me, I went with the option of asking a question/filing a new claim. The system told me that I could reach a claims agent by calling 667-207-6520, or I could get assistance online through the Maryland Unemployment Office's website. The system then offered me the chance to hear the message again, and when I did not, the system said goodbye and automatically hung up.
Overall, I thought the system did a decent job preparing for potential problems and making itself at least somewhat useful to any callers. Only offering this number to give out payment information and to file information related to a claim does limit how useful it is, but the system gives out plenty of ways to get assistance with the issue that is actually happening. Directing customers to another phone line or the website gives them a genuine way to get assistance, and it can save customers confusion from being stuck with a system that won't provide them with any help.
It was also a plus to see that the system didn't try to restrict people outside the geographic area from calling. With people constantly moving to different cities and states, using area code restrictions doesn't work anymore. Maryland seems to recognize this and allows these calls to still get through and get help.
This system could be more useful, but it's not meant to be informational or help people who aren't already on unemployment. It's meant to make claiming benefits easier, and it does that well. If I did need help from the Maryland Unemployment Office, I'd consider this option.
