An important note: busy times vs hold times vs best time to call
When we refer to busy or less busy times, we are talking about the volume of calls. The busiest times are when the most people are calling this Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV/RMV) phone number (least busy times have fewer people calling). This high call volume does not necessarily mean that you will have a long hold time when you call. Companies like Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV/RMV) staff their call centers differently based on the time of day and day of the week, so you may experience a shorter wait on hold at the busiest of times. When we refer to the best time to call, we are referring to the optimal combination of lower call volume and shorter wait times.

The best time to call Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV/RMV)

Once again, please put this information in perspective because this phone number has no phone menu or long waits. It generally gets picked up right away if calling during their opening hours. If there is any way, it will typically be very short.

Calling this Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV/RMV) Customer Number

According to the Vermont Department of Vehicles website, the phone number I should call is 1-802-828-2000 to get help with any issues. However, I called that four times at different times over two days, and the line was busy. A second number is listed on the website, so I attempted that, and it worked. That was annoying since the primary number also came off their website, but I assume that is a power outage or something they deal with on a regular basis since the backup number was listed under it.

I knew I had reached the correct number because it thanked me for calling the Vermont DMV and then reminded me to have my license plate, VIN, or personal ID number handy to expedite the phone call. Then I was given a very short list of options: press one for questions about licensing, registrations, and exams or press two for suspensions. I chose option one and then listened to a recording that went on for over three minutes.

The recording recited a number of tasks that could be done online and seemed to go on forever. First, it told me that any learner's permit or scheduling tasks could only be done online. If I needed to schedule something else, then I could call a different number or choose a different option to be immediately connected. Then it told me I could go online to take care of a variety of tasks, or I could mail a request to the DMV if I needed to cancel a registration after moving out of state.

There was no option to skip through any of this discussion, and it got quite annoying listening to a number of things that didn't pertain to my phone call. Finally, it stated that callers should wait three weeks for any transactions to finish before calling to check on their status and that for all other questions, press six.

After pressing six, I was connected to the general information line and reminded to have my name, date of birth, and license number to expedite the process. It took about ten minutes for someone to pick up once the wait music started, and that was after four minutes of the directory mess and recorded messaging. I was able to get an answer from the agent once they answered in under two minutes. It seemed a waste that it took me that long to ask one question. It was clear that they wanted people to avoid calling them, given how many things they stated could be done elsewhere.
