Calling this Michigan Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV/RMV) Customer Number

Sep 8, 2023

It appears that the Michigan DMV has recently moved its phone services to another number, as this number doesn't work at all. When you dial it, a voice responds, "You have reached a non-working number for the State of Michigan," and the phone then automatically hangs up.

This change is likely fairly recent, as several official sources list this as a valid phone number, including the City of Lansing's government page, Jackson County, and an older page on the state of Michigan's website. It appears this number was mostly used to look up vehicle histories when it was active, as each source that lists it as an official number has it listed as an official source for court records.

However, the updated Michigan.gov web page says that the number for the Michigan DMV is actually 888-767-6424. This has you go through the Secretary of State's office to reach the DMV, which does make sense, given that searching for the Michigan DMV online does redirect you to the Secretary of State.

It's not clear as to when or why Michigan changed the number for its DMV records, but it's clear that this number simply doesn't work. The county and city government need to update the information so that drivers can actually get the information they need. There's no information about what number to dial instead of this one.

Given that this number leads to an automated response, it seems like this could have been recorded as a new message to direct Michigan drivers to the right phone number or to the website. Adding either as a place for Michigan drivers to get assistance could help people get the information they need until the websites have been properly updated to reflect the change in phone numbers.

As it is, Michigan drivers are on their own if they go to a county or city government page looking for information. Drivers can find information if they search the state DMV, but if you try calling the numbers through your local levels of government, you won't have any success. Given that people often go through their own local governments for DMV issues before they need help at the state level, this system doesn't seem to be very efficient.

If I needed assistance from the Michigan DMV, I'd look up the new phone number and give that a try. Obviously, with this number no longer operational, I do not recommend using this number to anyone.
