What are the hours and when should I call?

MassHealth operates the call center for this 855-781-9898 phone number Mon-Fri 8am-5pm ET. The short answer is that you should call on a Thursday. This observation and the following section are based on analysis of a sample set of 8,382 calls made in the last 90 days using our free, web-based phone (see above).

Automatically call when they open

When you use our free AI-powered phone to call and talk, wait on hold, or navigate for you, it will automatically wait until the MassHealth call center opens before trying to call. It will ask your permission before it places the call, so you can also further delay that scheduled call until you are ready. But that means you can "set it and forget it" ahead of time.
An important note: busy times vs hold times vs best time to call
When we refer to busy or less busy times, we are talking about the volume of calls. The busiest times are when the most people are calling this MassHealth phone number (least busy times have fewer people calling). This high call volume does not necessarily mean that you will have a long hold time when you call. Companies like MassHealth staff their call centers differently based on the time of day and day of the week, so you may experience a shorter wait on hold at the busiest of times. When we refer to the best time to call, we are referring to the optimal combination of lower call volume and shorter wait times.

The least busy time to call

The least busy day to call MassHealth is Thursday. The most busy day to call is Monday. Again, this is based on a sample of 8,382 calls made with our AI-powered, web-based phone in the last 90 days.

The shortest wait on hold

We measured the shortest hold times to be on Friday. The longest wait in the queue on average occurs on Thursday.
But if you use our free call and talk for me or wait on hold for me service, you don't really need to worry about average wait times.

The best time to call MassHealth

In summation, the best day to call MassHealth is Thursday. This is not the day with the shortest wait on hold in the phone system, but we still recommend it for its ideal combination of low call volume and short hold times. Plus we believe that MassHealth staffs the call center well on Thursday.

Calling this MassHealth Customer Number

May 29, 2024

Calling this number was totally ineffective if you aren't already a customer of MassHealth or a prescribing physician. When I called, I was taken into the automated system and asked if I was a customer or a physician. I said customer, and I was asked to either provide my MassHealth account number by pressing 1 or my Social Security number by pressing 2.

Without having either, I tried to say that I didn't have either one, but the system only repeated its request. I tried to enter an invalid entry by pressing another button, but once again, the system simply repeated its request. With no way out of this infinite loop, as the system just kept repeating itself no matter what I did, I ultimately hung up.

Calling after hours gives a slightly different experience, as the offices are closed and you can't speak to anyone. Calling on a weekend gives you a different message where you're taken to the automated menu and can access health records by entering the patient's date of birth. However, as you're still asked to enter sensitive information that many people would not want to make public, it's still not very effective if you aren't already a customer.

Based on this experience, I'd only use this number if I was an existing customer or physician. You can't use it to get information, so if you aren't already in the system, it's useless to you.

Why Customers Call MassHealth

If you have time to do a bit of reading before you call MassHealth, we recommend you read over some of our problem-specific articles.

What services are covered by MassHealth?

MassHealth provides a broad range of medical services to eligible Massachusetts residents. These services include doctor visits, hospital stays, emergency care, and preventive screenings. MassHealth covers prescription drugs, lab tests, X-rays, and necessary surgeries. Behavioral and mental health services, including counseling and substance abuse treatment, are also covered. Additionally, MassHealth provides coverage for dental care, vision care, and audiology services. The program supports long-term care, such as nursing home and home health services, as well as rehabilitative services, physical therapy, and medical equipment. MassHealth covers family planning services, including contraceptives, and offers maternity and newborn care. Specialized programs are available for children with disabilities and individuals needing assistance with personal care. While the scope of services covered is extensive, certain limitations and restrictions may apply, so it is advisable to consult the current MassHealth guidelines for specific coverage details.

What are the income limits to qualify for MassHealth?

The income limits to qualify for MassHealth depend on various factors such as family size and type of coverage sought. As of 2021, for the MassHealth Standard and CommonHealth programs, individuals with a family size of one can have a monthly income of up to $1,073, while a family of two can have up to $1,452. For families with children under 19, certain income limits apply based on the percentage of the federal poverty level (FPL). For example, a family of three can have a maximum monthly income of $2,350 (100% FPL) or $5,700 (250% FPL) to qualify. The MassHealth website provides detailed information on income limits for different programs and coverage types, ensuring individuals can determine eligibility accordingly.

Can I have both MassHealth and Medicare?

Yes, it is possible to have both MassHealth and Medicare. MassHealth is a state program that provides healthcare coverage for low-income individuals and families in Massachusetts, while Medicare is a federal health insurance program for people who are 65 and older or have certain disabilities. If you qualify for MassHealth and are also eligible for Medicare, you can have both coverages. MassHealth may help cover Medicare premiums, deductibles, and coinsurance, which can help reduce your out-of-pocket expenses. It can also provide additional benefits not covered by Medicare, such as dental, vision, and extended nursing home care. To enroll in both programs, you need to apply separately for MassHealth and Medicare. It is important to understand the specific eligibility criteria and coverage options for each program. Consulting with a MassHealth representative or visiting their official website can provide you with more detailed information regarding your specific circumstances.
