Open your web browser and head to the main National Grid homepage. First, you’ll be asked to choose your region, as National Grid services different areas. If the site isn't loading or you'd prefer to speak with a person, you can speak to the National Grid directly to skip the search.
Go to the sign in area in the top right corner of the homepage. Enter your username and password. If you haven’t set up an online account yet, register first using the 10-digit account number, access code and zip code found on a recent bill. Once you’ve entered your credentials, sign in to access your main dashboard.
Once you’re logged into your account, look for a tab or menu item labeled "Manage Service." Within that menu, there’s an option that says "Stop, Start, or Transfer Service." Go ahead and click that link.
On the next screen, you’ll see three options: stop service (for closing an account completely), start service (for new customers) and transfer service. Since you’re changing your address and moving to a new location that’s also within the National Grid service area, select the "Transfer Service" option.
Now, enter the date you wish to stop service at your current address and the date you want the electricity or gas turned on at your new address. Enter your new street address carefully so the system can validate it against the official postal format.
Take a moment to review all the information you’ve entered. Double-check the dates to ensure you won’t be left without power at either location during the transition. Once you’re satisfied that the information is accurate, submit your request. You should receive a confirmation email shortly after. If you run into error messages, system timeouts or the address won’t validate, it’s best to contact National Grid customer support directly to resolve the issue.
Once you’ve submitted your transfer request online, you'll get a confirmation email from National Grid almost immediately. Save this message until your first bill arrives at the new house, just for your own records. Expect a final bill for your old address to arrive shortly after your stop date, covering any remaining usage.
Your new service is scheduled to begin automatically on the date you selected. If you don't receive a confirmation or the power isn't on when you arrive, visit the National Grid to find the quickest way to reach a real person for help.
