JetBlue Airlines is an American airline provider known for its discount flights. It is the sixth-largest airline carrier in the United States as measured by the number of passengers carried. Founded in 2000, the airline has grown over the years and now flies to 100 destinations.

If you recently were on a JetBlue flight and realized your luggage was damaged after you got off the plan, follow these steps for compensation.


File a Claim at the Airport

Ideally, it's best to file a claim while you're still at the airport. The minute you collect your luggage and realize there's some damage, you should find a JetBlue employee and ask to file a claim. Ask the crewmember to give you a copy of the claim either in paper form or via email so you can confirm it's been filed. You will receive a response from JetBlue once your claim has been processed.


File a Claim After Leaving the Airport

If you have already left the airport, you can still file a claim. Call into the JetBlue Customer Service line and ask to file the report. Once again, make sure to ask for an email confirmation that the claim has been filed. Keep the customer service representative on the phone with you until you receive the email and review its details.

The airline carrier will review your claim and notify you of the decision. You should know it can take several business days to weeks to receive a response. According to the JetBlue Airlines policy, the maximum amount a passenger can receive in compensation for damaged or lost baggage is $3,500. However, it's also the policy that "passengers must make a reasonable effort to minimize the amount of damage or loss" to their own baggage.

You will have to provide documents that prove the original price of the baggage, and JetBlue will deduct any applicable depreciation for prior usage or damage. The final reimbursement amount is determined by the airline.
