What You'll Need

Hewlett Packard offers two different kinds of warranty:Standard warranties are good for 1 to 3 years (varying by product) and cover hardware malfunctions that are the result of manufacturing errors. They do not cover normal wear and tear, accidental damage, damages caused by unauthorized repairs, or software issues.Extended warranties, also known as Hewlett Packard Care Packs, last longer than standard warranties and cover the same issues. With them, you get priority access to Hewlett Packard support staff and, if you get the Accidental Damage Protection add on, also protects from accidental damage.For more details, read the terms of your warranty which came with your computer.

Before you start a warranty claim with Hewlett Packard, get the receipt for your purchase. It may be helpful during the claim filing process.

Go to the Hewlett Packard home page and enter a description of your computer's problem into the search bar at the top of the page.

Before you file a warranty claim, see if the problem is actually quick and easy to fix yourself. It would be pointless to go through all the trouble of a warranteed repair when you don't have to.

Find your computer's serial number by looking on the computer.

If you have an Hewlett Packard desktop, look for a sticker on the side or back that has a number on it and starts with SN or S/N. If you have an Hewlett Packard laptop, the number will be on the bottom, on the stand, or in the battery compartment. If you locate the serial number, skip to step 6.

Conduct a Windows search for the term "Hewlett Packard Support Assistant."

Open the Hewlett Packard Support Assistant app.

Your computer's serial number should be displayed on the dashboard.

Go to the Hewlett Packard warranty status page.

Select the country you purchased the computer in from the drop down menu.

Enter your computer's serial number in the text field provided for it.

Click the Submit button.

Your warranty status will be displayed on your screen.

If your computer is still under warranty then call an Hewlett Packard customer service representative.

Once you file the warranty claim, the representative will give you instructions on what to do next. If you have any questions about whether or not your computer's issue is covered by your warranty, ask a customer service representative.
