American Express is an international corporation that provides financial services such as credit cards for corporations, small businesses and the average consumer. It also provides services for travelers, such as credit cards, personal and corporate travel planning, organizations for reserving hotel and car rentals, tour packages and traveler's checks.

American Express is the fourth-largest card network in the world based on how many cards are in circulation and the fourth-largest in the world based on purchase volume. It is the most popular credit card in 23 countries around the world, including the United States and the United Kingdom. American Express also has co-branded credit cards in several of the top hotels, airlines and retailers.

Those who use American Express' financial services can manage them online through their American Express account. You need both your user ID and password to access it. If you've lost one or both of them, follow these steps to recover your account:

Recover Your User ID

Step one: Go to the American Express website.

Step two: Click on My Account, located at the top of the page.

Step three: From the dropdown menu, click Forgot User ID or Password? under Help & Support.

Step four: Enter your 15-digit American Express card number and the four-digit card ID (CID). It is printed on the front of your card, above your card number, on the right. Click continue.

You'll be directed to the login page where your user ID will already be filled in.

It's a good idea to write down your user ID and keep it somewhere safe in case it gets lost again.

Recover Your Password

Step one: On the login page, click Forgot Password.

Step two: Enter your 15-digit American Express card number and the four-digit card ID (CID). Click continue.

Step three: There will be a security question for you to answer. Instead, you can click Use a Different Verification Method to receive a text or email with a one-time passcode (OTP). When you receive it, enter the six-digit number and click Continue.

Step four: If you're asked for more security information — like the three-digit number on the back of the card — enter it.

Step five: Create a new password and include all the necessary criteria. Retype your new password.

Step six: Now that you have retrieved your user ID and created a new password, you can use them to log in to your account.

If you need any more assistance, contact American Express and a customer service representative will help you.
