Many households share credit cards to make financial matters easier to keep track of. If you have an American Express account and you want to add other users to the account, keep reading.

Authorized Users

An authorized user is anyone who you authorize to use your account. American Express has no restrictions on who you can authorize. However, you should take care in choosing who to authorize because you are ultimately responsible for the account. If your authorized user runs up too many charges or overdraws your account, you will have to pay, not the user. You should draw up an agreement with your authorized user about how much they can charge and when they must make payments.

How to Add an Authorized User to Your American Express Account

Follow these instructions to add an authorized user:

  1. First, go to the American Express web page and log in to your account.
  2. Scroll down your account page until you see Add Someone to Your Account under the Useful links header on the right side of the page.
  3. Enter the full names, email addresses, and social security numbers in the text fields provided.
  4. Provide any other information if requested.
  5. The users you add to your account will be sent their own cards to use.

If you have an American Express Gold card, you can add up to five authorized users for free. Each user after that costs an additional $35 per year. If you have an American Express Platinum card, you can add up to three users for $175 per year. Each additional user after that costs another $175 per year. Additionally, you'll pay $175 per year for each additional user if you have the Delta Sky Miles Reserve American Express card.
