My Experience Calling 785-296-3621

Aug 10, 2023

When you call the Kansas Department of Revenue's Division of Vehicles, you get a menu that's a bit awkward, as it skips to different options rather than progressing through queries in a linear fashion. The menu options are also fairly confusing, so I initially ended up going to the wrong department and had my call dropped before anyone answered my questions.

On my second attempt, I was able to reach a representative without issue. When I did reach a representative, I was asked my name and how she could provide assistance. I asked her what kind of costs I could expect to pay to title and register my vehicle in Kansas, and she informed me that the cost can vary depending on what county I lived in. I told her that I lived in Wichita and asked if that was Sedgwick County, which she confirmed was accurate. She then told me that she could transfer me over to the Sedgwick County Division of Vehicles so that I could get a full answer to my question.

I then thanked her and she seemed to hit the transfer button, although I heard no sounds or message coming from the phone. After a minute, I ended the call, as it was no longer taking place with the Kansas DOV.

Overall, I thought the service that I got from the Kansas DOV was acceptable, but this number really seems to be more of a call center than an actual place to get assistance given how Kansas appears to operate its vehicle titles and registrations. If each county has its own costs for registration, most questions would be answered at the county level rather than the state level.

However, given the makeup of Kansas and how many of its residents do not have access to reliable broadband internet, that actually does make sense. Kansas is one of the most rural states in the nation and ranks 48th overall in access to broadband, so a sizeable amount of residents of the Sunflower State really don't have another way to get the information they need from the Division of Vehicles.

Overall, I wouldn't use this number for anything other than being directed to the right place, as it seems to be set up as a directory or call center instead of a place to get genuine assistance. The menu could be cleaned up somewhat to make it more linear and less awkward, but otherwise, this number does serve a purpose for rural Kansans in need of information on vehicle titles and registrations.
