The issue in GetHuman-cleavitt's own words
I went to the dollar tree in Gahanna Ohio on ********** at around *:**pm est. the person who rang me up was James.*I purchased $**.** worth of Halloween decorations. I was paying close attention to how much I was spending because I am on a tight budget and need to make sure I am not overspending but I also wanted to get decorations for my house because halloween is such a fun holiday for my * children. *While James was ringing us up, his behavior was erratic- bouncing from one task to the other. He would stop in the middle of ringing me up to tidy his station or look up at the ceiling or hum himself a little tune. He was distracted and made a scene of placing a coupon in one of my bags. *When the total on the tiny screen reflected a balance of $**.** I figured it was affordable and I went through the process of validating my debit card on the pin pad. *When the screen on the pin pad asked if I would like cash back, I pressed “no” because I don’t ever do that and I had no need for cash. So I continued validating my card until I had finished my portion of the transaction. At that point I glanced at the tiny raised screen- with the green digits- and it said “**.**”. James very quickly pressed a button- so quickly that I wondered if what I had seen was correct. I said “ **.**??? How could that be??? The earlier screen said **.**”. It flashed for only a second. James just looked at me. I said again “please look at my receipt, I did not purchase $** worth of items, why did the screen say that I had spent that much?” And he once again did not respond. He looked around and did not say a single word. Finally, the customer behind me said “oh you must have pressed “cash back” because the balance is $** more then what you spent”. I shrugged. James also shrugged. And then he opened his drawer and gave me $** in ones. (He had only minutes before started his shift. I know this because he parked next to me when I arrived at the store and my daughter waved at him, and he waved back which made her very happy). Anyway, he emptied his drawer of ones to give me the cash back. I apologized for the inconvenience and I walked out with my merchandise. *But I can’t shake this transaction. Something feels very wrong here. I can’t help but feel like James had pressed the cash back option and was attempting to keep the additional cash for himself. The last thing I would ever want to do would be to hurt his ability to support himself. I feel badly writing this- but given how unusual the whole situation was, I feel like it’s pertinent to bring this to someone’s attention In case this is an ongoing matter. *Thank you for reading this, I appreciate your time.
