For the sake of all Patients, PLEASE pass this e-mail up to higher authorities who may be able to do something about it:**I'm writing to express my outrage about the difficulty Patients have in knowing the prices of medical services. I this is an issue throughout the medical world. All too often, Patients have NO idea how much any medical service is going to cost until they get the Bill--whether it's a Doctor's visit, a test or procedure, or anything else. I fully understand that Health Insurance makes things complicated--Doctors & their staff aren't going to know which Insurance companies or plans cover what things, & how much of it they cover. But Doctors' offices NEED to give Patients some kind of ballpark-estimate of the cost of medical services!**I recently went to a Sleep Specialist . I talked to one of the Doctors for about ** minutes, & I took home a sleep-oxygen-monitor. And I ended up with a total Bill of over $***!!! All that for just ** minutes & a very small, take-home sleep-monitor!!! I would NEVER have visited the Sleep Specialist if I knew it would cost me that much!**I fully understand that there are extra costs for setting up a new Patient, & I understand that Insurance Deductibles have to be met before Insurance companies will start covering the costs of medical services. But Doctors' offices NEED to give Patients some kind of price-estimate on medical services BEFORE the Patients agree to purchase those services! This problem doesn't exist in basically ANY other industry! Any other good or service people buy, there's either a price-tag, or some kind of price-estimate.**The ever-rising costs of medical care are frustrating enough--but the last thing Patients need is to not have any meaningful idea of what those costs are beforehand.
