I purchased ADA sleeper tickets for myself and a companion by Amtrak's ticket reservationist by phone from Oakland, CA to Anaheim, CA for November *st, with SMS delay alerts enabled. On November *st. there were BART train (local train from home to the Oakland Jack London Station) delays causing me to rush out by taking a $** Lyft and forgetting my backpack and wallet with no time to circle home before getting on the freeway. Upon arriving ** minutes before our schedule departure time, we were informed by a station announcement that the train had been delayed *.* hours, then * hours, and finally departed nearly *.* hours late. Once we boarded, we were told we had missed breakfast due to the late arrival and had informed the Amtrak staff member we would like our meals in-room for the duration of the trip. While he did offer us cereal due to the delayed pickup, we never received any offer to order meals to the room for lunch or dinner, and arrived ** hours after leaving home with nothing but cereal to eat since ** am. Upon arriving to Los Angeles at **:** for our **:** transfer to Anaheim, we ended up having to wait another *.* hours for our *nd train delay caused by engine replacement due to mechanical issues on our scheduled train. Upon finally arriving in Orange County at * AM, we had missed the cutoff time to checkin to our AirBnB by midnight on Nov. *nd, wasting $*** on the AirBnB rental before having to spend another $*** for a nearby hotel on Thursday night. After this experience, and several similar negative trips in the past year alone, I doubt I'll ever trust Amtrak with my travel needs again. The lack of communication by text or Twitter regarding these delays that were identified long before we rushed out the door at *:** AM on November *st, prove that Amtrak is an outdated and unreliable option for long-distance transit.
