How long can I receive unemployment benefits?

Asked a year ago
Unemployment benefits in Virginia are generally available for a maximum of 26 weeks or until the claimant exhausts their maximum benefit amount, whichever comes first. The maximum benefit amount is typically calculated based on the claimant's earnings during a specific period prior to filing the claim. Additionally, it is worth noting that during periods of high unemployment, the state and federal governments may provide additional weeks of benefits through extended benefit programs. These extensions are determined and announced based on the prevailing economic conditions. Claimants must continue to meet certain eligibility requirements, such as being able and available to work, actively seeking suitable employment, and reporting their job search activities.
