p>When you making payments online or by phone, you will often get asked the routing number of the checking account. A routing number shows the location your account was opened. It is also referred to as a routing transit number (RTN.)

A routing number is specific to each bank. There is no way that two different banks can have the same routing number. Routing numbers are used when:

  • Making direct deposits from your bank account especially when you are making the same payments every month. You can schedule with your bank to pay the bills automatically and for this, you will need a routing number.
  • Processing checks – When depositing checks, they are processed faster when you give a routing number.
  • Transferring funds – The number comes in handy, especially when doing bank-to-bank transfers. It allows financial institutions to transfer money to each other.
  • Filing taxes – You need to provide your routing number when you file taxes so that you can receive your tax refund.
  • Depositing salaries and pensions into your account.
  • Making wire transfers.

Your account number, on the other hand, is directly linked to your account. Your account number is ten to 12 digits depending on the bank, while the routing number has nine digits. Different types of transactions use different routing numbers. Therefore, the routing number on your checks might be different from the one you need for direct debit. You can identify your account and routing numbers by:
