It’s really frustrating when you get a gift card from a friend, click on it, try to sign in, and suddenly get locked out. That’s when you know you’ve been hacked. Hackers can access your account, change your password, email address, and even your Steam Guard settings, hoping to access your bank details if they're linked to your account. But don’t worry—there are a few steps you can take to recover your account before calling support. To avoid future hacks, make sure to enable Steam Guard two-factor authentication for added security.
The first step after realizing you have been hacked is self-recovery. On your computer, phone or your friends, go to the sign in page.
On the sign-in page, just below the sign-in button, click "Help, I can’t sign in."
You will be redirected this page. Click “My steam account was stolen and I need help recovering it.”
Scroll down, and click “Reset my password.” According to Steam, hijackers can’t steal your Steam account or interfere with Steam support if you change the password associated with your email account.
Enter the email address associated with your Steam Account and complete the CAPTCHA verification. Click search.
If they find your account, you’ll be redirected to this page. Click “I no longer have access to my email address.” At this point, we’re assuming by now the hacker has already changed the password or email address.
You will be redirected to this page. Next, reset your email password and enter the email associated with your Steam account. If the hacker has already changed your email, provide additional information like your username, phone number, or details about your account, such as the first email used or games purchased. Steam support will email you, but it may take some time for them to respond. To prevent future hacks, enable Steam Guard two-factor authentication.
GetHuman has been working for over 10 years on sourcing information about big organizations like Steam Software in order to help customers resolve customer service issues faster. We started with contact information and fastest ways to reach a human at big companies. Particularly ones with slow or complicated IVR or phone menu systems. Or companies that have self-serve help forums instead of a customer service department. From there, we realized that consumers still needed more detailed help solving the most common problems, so we expanded to this set of guides, which grows every day. And if you spot any issues with our What do I do if my Steam account was hacked? guide, please let us know by sending us feedback. We want to be as helpful as possible. If you appreciated this guide, please share it with your favorite people. Our free information and tools is powered by you, the customer. The more people that use it, the better it gets.
