Introduction

If you found unauthorized charges on your Capital One account, or if you tried to purchase something that turned out to be a scam, you need to know how to report the fraud to the bank. The procedure is not complicated, but there are a few things you need to do first.

What You'll Need

To reduce the chance of future fraud, enroll in paperless billing. That way, your account information can't be read by anyone going through your mail or trash.Enable purchase notifications so that you get alerted to unauthorized transactions the moment they are made.

Talk with any other authorized users of your card or account.

See if they made a transaction you just didn't know about.
If the suspected fraud is not an unauthorized charge, skip to step 4.

Check your subscriptions.

See if you have a recurring payment that you forgot about, or if a free trial period has just ended, resulting in a surprise charge.

Look into the merchant's name.

It is possible that an unfamiliar charge might actually be a purchase that you made, but that the bill comes from a parent company that has a different name than the seller.

Call a Capital One representative and report the fraud.

Why does GetHuman Write How-to Guides for Capital One Problems?

GetHuman has been working for over 10 years on sourcing information about big organizations like Comcast in order to help customers resolve customer service issues faster. We started with contact information and fastest ways to reach a human at big companies. Particularly ones with slow or complicated IVR or phone menu systems. Or companies that have self-serve help forums instead of a customer service department. From there, we realized that consumers still needed more detailed help solving the most common problems, so we expanded to this set of guides, which grows every day. And if you spot any issues with our What do I do if my Xfinity TV or internet is out? guide, please let us know by sending us feedback. We want to be as helpful as possible. If you appreciated this guide, please share it with your favorite people. Our free information and tools is powered by you, the customer. The more people that use it, the better it gets.
