You can request special assistance when booking your flight, after purchasing your ticket, or upon arrival at the airport. Once you request special assistance, a coordinator may contact you before your trip to confirm your needs and help ensure the necessary arrangements are in place. Whether you're planning a trip or have already booked your flight, this guide will show you how to request wheelchair assistance with American Airlines.
If you haven't booked your flight yet, tap Wheelchair Services in the Passenger Information. Just click the + sign to request special assistance during your flight.
Will you be bringing your own wheelchair, or do you need an airport wheelchair? Select the appropriate option and click Save. If you require an airport wheelchair, you'll also be asked to specify the level of assistance you need, such as wheelchair service from the ticket counter to the aircraft door and whether you require assistance navigating stairs. Passengers who are unable to walk may also request assistance transferring to their seats on the aircraft.
If you plan to travel with your own wheelchair, be sure to provide details about the mobility device. American Airlines may ask whether it is a manual wheelchair or a powered wheelchair and, if powered, the type of battery it uses, such as a wet-cell, dry-cell, or lithium-ion battery.
Have you already booked your flight? Find your trip and request special assistance from there.
To find your flight, enter your last name, date of birth, and confirmation number, then click Find Your Trip. Once your trip details appear, go to the Special Services section and select Wheelchair Services. The process is similar to requesting assistance during booking. You'll be asked to indicate whether you need an airport wheelchair or plan to travel with your own wheelchair.
You can also request wheelchair assistance on the day of your travel. Simply speak with an American Airlines representative or airport staff member, and they can help arrange the service. American Airlines can provide wheelchair assistance from the gate, between connecting gates, and from the arrival gate to baggage claim.
You can also use the online form to request wheelchair access at the airport. Just select Disability Assistance, then Wheelchair Device, and click Next.
Fill out the contact information, flight information, and device service request. Then, click Submit.
You can also request wheelchair access via the telephone. Just contact the Special Assistance team to request a wheelchair during your flight or for a family member's flight.
If you requested an airport wheelchair through American Airlines, it's recommended that you arrive at the airport at least 90 minutes before your flight. If you have a connecting flight, allow at least two hours between flights to ensure you have enough time to transfer between gates and receive any necessary assistance.
Were you able to request special assistance? If you booked your American Airlines flight through a travel agency, you may be able to request wheelchair assistance by contacting the agency directly. You can also use American Airlines' online form to request special assistance before your trip. Passengers traveling with a personal wheelchair should arrive at least three hours before departure to allow time for check-in and security screening. GetHuman has been working for over 10 years on sourcing information about big organizations like Comcast in order to help customers resolve customer service issues faster. We started with contact information and fastest ways to reach a human at big companies. Particularly ones with slow or complicated IVR or phone menu systems. Or companies that have self-serve help forums instead of a customer service department. From there, we realized that consumers still needed more detailed help solving the most common problems, so we expanded to this set of guides, which grows every day. And if you spot any issues with our What do I do if my Xfinity TV or internet is out? guide, please let us know by sending us feedback. We want to be as helpful as possible. If you appreciated this guide, please share it with your favorite people. Our free information and tools is powered by you, the customer. The more people that use it, the better it gets.
