Does Target Pay for Shipping on Returns or Exchanges?

Target.com and the Target app provides customers with a free shipping label to send back any unsatisfactory product returns. In some cases, Target will also refund the shipping costs of the original item. They will not issue a refund if the return is not accepted at their return center, or depending on the reason for the return. If you encounter problems, or feel you're entitled to a refund, contact Target Customer Service.

If your purchase from Target.com or via the Target mobile app was unsatisfactory, you can return the item by accessing your order history and then selecting to return the item.

Target will provide you with a shipping label, however, you must take the package yourself to a nearby, certified UPS store.

Other Carriers

If your item was delivered via FedEx or Estes Forwarding Worldwide, the process is a little different. You must arrange for EFW to pick up your item. Begin this process by contacting Target Customer Service. EFW will contact you within two business days to arrange for a pickup. In this case, Target also covers shipping costs.

Original Purchase

Sometimes, you may want shipping refunded on your original purchase as well. Target only covers these returns under specific conditions. It's possible that your return got declined when Target received it. Some reasons for declining a return are:

  • You returned the item too late. You usually only have about 90 days to return an item, though some items, such as electronics or mobile phones, have a much smaller return window.
  • The item appears to have been used or worn.
  • The item was opened.
  • The item is one of the non-returnable categories. Target does not accept returns of opened music, movies, video games, software, or airbeds.
  • Your purchase could not be confirmed.
  • The item was not sold by Target.

If your return was declined, Target will not refund your shipping costs. Target usually only refunds shipping costs when the issue is one of product quality or an error on Target's part (i.e., you were sent the wrong item by mistake or your order is missing items).

If you believe you are entitled to a refund on shipping costs, contact Target Customer Service. Describe your issue, providing photos or screenshots of proof of purchase and the item in question, if possible.

Why does GetHuman Write How-to Guides for Target Problems?

GetHuman has been working for over 10 years on sourcing information about big organizations like Target in order to help customers resolve customer service issues faster. We started with contact information and fastest ways to reach a human at big companies. Particularly ones with slow or complicated IVR or phone menu systems. Or companies that have self-serve help forums instead of a customer service department. From there, we realized that consumers still needed more detailed help solving the most common problems, so we expanded to this set of guides, which grows every day. And if you spot any issues with our Does Target Pay for Shipping on Returns or Exchanges? guide, please let us know by sending us feedback. We want to be as helpful as possible. If you appreciated this guide, please share it with your favorite people. Our free information and tools is powered by you, the customer. The more people that use it, the better it gets.
