When calling the South Dakota Division of Motor Vehicles, the first thing the caller hears is an automated recording that greets you and then asks you to choose an option. The directory is rather lengthy, and you have to listen through about two minutes of options before it tells you that you can stay on the line to talk to someone. I wanted to talk to someone about what I would need in order to transfer a title from my mother's name into my name, so their options did not really fit for this specific circumstance.

The options were to press one for issues regarding driver's licenses, press two for prorated licenses, press three for motor services, press four for decals, and press five to talk to a county official. None of these were a great fit, although I pondered pressing three, but decided to simply stay on the line to talk to some. This way, I would avoid listening to the entire directory call as well, but I may have ended up on hold a lot longer by choosing this option.

There was also an option six, which was unusual and worth noting. It said that I could leave a message and they will call me back. I wanted an answer right now and didn't want to wait a day or two for someone to call back, and it didn't specify how long the wait would be for the callback, but it was interesting.

As noted, I chose to talk to someone, and so simply stayed on the line. The hold system was odd as there was no music and no tone. It was just dead silence, which made me think several times that my phone call was disconnected. Each time after a few minutes would pass of dead air, I would wonder if I should call back, but then a recorded message would tell me that "all customer service agents are busy and calls would be answered in the order they received."

This went on for about 15 minutes, and then finally, someone answered the phone call. They spoke clear English and were able to promptly answer my questions. They gave me a list of items that I and my mother would need to transfer the title into my name. By the time I hung up, I had no further questions, so overall it was a decent experience.
