This is an old issue. Last year I wrote a check for * home insurance policies. Travelers did not read the line on the check that wrote out in words the amount of the check, then started telling me that the payment for one of my houses was late. I contacted my agent and I called Travelers and eventually the issue got straightened out. My bank told me that the legal amount of the check is the amount written out in words on the second line. I think that a computer may just read the amount in numbers on the first line.
