Top Tip from another customer
To recover your Facebook account click https://www.facebook.com/help/contact/183000765122339 then enter your email or phone number into the space on the screen and click “Search”. You should see your profile picture show up on the right side of the next page with an option to send a code to your email on the account or the phone number on the account. Choose one, then go to your email or phone number you choose to get the code. Enter the code and click “Continue”, from there you should be prompted to create a new password. Once you create a new password you should be able to log in.
The issue in GetHuman-andyhey's own words
I got an email from Facebook saying "email removed from my facebook account". I didn't do this, so I followed steps to secure my account. I was able to follow steps to provide proof of id, add my email back, and change the password, but then it said I'd set up two factor authentication and needed to enter a code to log in to complete the process of securing my account. I have never set up two factor authentication. Clearly the criminal who hacked my account set this up so I wouldn't be able to go back in.**So I now feel like I'm in an infinite loop with Facebook. There's no way to contact them by phone or email as far as I can see, and the self-service options they provide just lead me back to the step of providing an authentication code to log in and do anything. I don't have much content on Facebook and I'd happily delete the account, but I can't even do that.**Help!

GetHuman-andyhey did not yet indicate what Facebook should do to make this right.

How GetHuman-andyhey fixed the problem
Perseverance paid. I repeatedly went through the "report account compromised" option in Facebook Help * Support. Many times I had the same experience of the auth code being sent (I assume) to the hacker's phone*device. Eventually the Facebook confirmation code came to my phone by SMS - I don't know why this happened. So I was able to to get into my account, remove the hacker's hotmail address, take off two-factor auth, change my login credentials, and re-add two-factor auth pointed at my phone. Seems to have sorted things - no more attempts to steal my account.**Not a sure fire fix I'm afraid. A case of trial and error. My take-away from this is that Facebook accounts are inherently not secure and through their uncontactability Facebook make it extraordinarily difficult to fix it when things go wrong. Consequently I will be permanently deleting my account.
