Can I receive unemployment benefits if I am receiving severance pay?

Asked a year ago
Yes, you may still be eligible for unemployment benefits while receiving severance pay in Hawaii. The amount of severance pay you receive could affect the amount of unemployment benefits you will be eligible to receive. If the severance pay is a lump sum, the Department of Labor and Industrial Relations (DLIR) will divide it by your average weekly pay to determine the weeks for which you will be disqualified from receiving benefits. If the severance pay is allocated over a specific period, you will not receive unemployment benefits until that period ends. It is important to report any severance pay received when filing your unemployment claim, as failure to do so can result in penalties or a loss of benefits.
