What is the excess and how does it work?

Asked a year ago
The excess is the amount of money you agree to pay towards a claim before your insurance coverage kicks in. It is a standard component of most insurance policies, including Direct Line. When you make a claim, you will need to pay the excess amount agreed upon initially. For example, if your excess is £250 and the claim amount is £1000, you are responsible for paying the first £250 and Direct Line will cover the remaining £750. However, if the claim amount is lower than the excess, you will have to cover the entire cost. The excess helps insurers reduce small claims and lower premiums. Direct Line offers customers the flexibility to choose their excess amount, allowing them to adjust the premium based on their preferences and financial situation.
