If your Colorado license has been lost or stolen, then you will need to get a new one. It's pretty easy to do this through the Colorado Motor Vehicle Division. This article will teach you how to do it.

Replacement Rules

You can get a duplicate license at no charge if you go to the Colorado Motor Vehicle Division office in person to get it and you do so between 30 and 90 days of the date your license was issued. If you cannot meet those requirements, you will be charged a fee.

The card you receive will be a duplicate card, not a new license. It will have the same class, endorsements, and expiration date as your lost or stolen card did.

Getting the Replacement in Person

To get the replacement license in person you will need to schedule an appointment at your local Colorado Motor Vehicle Division office. To do so, go to the Colorado Motor Vehicle Division's website and schedule an appointment. Select Renew Colorado License/Identification Card for your appointment type. Go into the office at the appointed time and you will get your replacement.

Getting the Replacement by Mail

To get the replacement by mail, follow these instructions:

  1. Go to the Colorado Motor Vehicle Division website.
  2. Click on the Forms link in the navigation bar.
  3. Select the DR 2989 form.
  4. Print the form out.
  5. Mail the form to the address below.

If you fear your license has been stolen, close all accounts that could be compromised. Notify your utilities, creditors, and anyone else you make payments to. File a police report, if appropriate. Keep a sharp eye out for any signs of fraud using your license and report them to the police and the three main credit reporting agencies.
