Identity theft is an all too common part of life in the modern world. If you have recently noticed a charge on your Barclays card that you didn't make, you should dispute that charge with Barclays.

Before You Dispute the Charge

Before you dispute the charge with Barclays, there are a few things to consider. First, ask other account users if they made the charge. Next, contact the merchant who's associated with the charge. The merchant may be able to resolve the matter more quickly than Barclays because they have ready access to any purchase information that Barclays would have to gather.

Disputing the Charge With Barclays Online

If the merchant doesn't work with you, initiate the dispute with Barclays online by following these instructions:

  1. Go to the Barclays web page.
  2. Log into your account.
  3. Click on Activities and Statements. You will be taken to a list of your transactions.
  4. Find the transaction you wish to dispute.
  5. Click on that transaction.
  6. Click on Dispute Transaction.
  7. Look for an email from Barclays indicating that the dispute process has been initiated.

Disputing the Charge With Barclays by Mail

If you can't go online to dispute the charge, you can do so by mail. Write down all of the details you can, such as transaction number, date, amount, location, and any evidence you have that you didn't make the charge. Be sure to give Barclays your contact information. Mail the letter to:

Disputing the Charge With Barclays by Phone

You can also initiate the dispute by phone. Just call Barclays customer service number. Ensure you have a transaction number, a date, the amount, the location, and any evidence you have that you did not make the charge.

After You Initiate the Dispute

After receiving your dispute, Barclays will contact the merchant and begin an investigation. During this time, you won't have to pay for the disputed transaction or any fees or interest associated with it. After the company has completed its investigation, it will notify you of its decision. Either it will cancel the charge or rule that the charge was valid, which will result in a deduction from your balance, along with any applicable fees and interest. The investigation should take less than 60 days, but if there are complications, it could take longer.
