An important note: busy times vs hold times vs best time to call
When we refer to busy or less busy times, we are talking about the volume of calls. The busiest times are when the most people are calling this US Postal Service (USPS) phone number (least busy times have fewer people calling). This high call volume does not necessarily mean that you will have a long hold time when you call. Companies like US Postal Service (USPS) staff their call centers differently based on the time of day and day of the week, so you may experience a shorter wait on hold at the busiest of times. When we refer to the best time to call, we are referring to the optimal combination of lower call volume and shorter wait times.

Calling this US Postal Service (USPS) Customer Number

Oct 31, 2023

Calling this number proved a positive experience, as I had minimal wait times and was able to quickly get connected with a customer service representative. Upon calling, I was told my call would be answered in the order it was received, provided I dialed within normal business hours ending at 4 p.m. Central time.

I did so, and within 10 minutes, I was connected with a representative. She asked how she could assist me, and I explained that my P.O. Box had been receiving a fair amount of mail addressed to the previous owner of the box. She asked what kind of mail had been arriving for the previous owner, and I told her it appeared to be a few pieces of actual mail, not just the kind of junk mail that comes out from advertisers.

I told her I was starting to get concerned people might be having important mail going to the wrong address, and I asked how I could handle this. She said the best thing I could is write Return to Sender on the envelope, send it back to them and alert the local post office that handles my PO Box. She said she'd be happy to give me their number or connect me to them.

Once she'd given me both numbers, she connected me with the number for the local post office. Having already spoken with them about the issue previously and gotten everything I needed from my call with the main number, I chose to hang up at that point.

Overall, I thought this was solid assistance from the representative. She offered some helpful advice to deal with the concern, and directed me to the people who'd actually be responsible for dealing with my issue. She spoke clearly, listened attentively and asked me to repeat myself once when she didn't completely understand something, showing that she clearly wanted to provide all the information needed to assist me.

The wait time wasn't too long, although it would have been a bit easier if an estimated wait time were provided. With the wait time at under 10 minutes, it's not a big deal.  Beyond that, it becomes a difficult wait without knowing how long you'll be on the line.

This number seems more appropriate for big-picture issues with the postal service, but I still received good, useful service. I'd use this phone number if needed to for postal issues.
