What Do I Do If My TD Ameritrade Account Has the Wrong Balance?

You can figure out what's causing the imbalance in your TD Ameritrade account by checking if you've made any deposits into your account or withdrawals. Ensure that transactions reflect the total amount of cash in your account. Find out if you've recently sold any assets. If so, ensure these trades reflect the portfolio's total market value. Check if TD Ameritrade hasn't executed your orders yet -- and wait until its completion.

You can track your balance if you have an account with TD Ameritrade. That way, you ensure you're getting the most from your investments. But what happens if you notice that your balance is wrong? Here are a few tips to figure out what went wrong and how you can solve the problem:

Check Your Dividends or Interest Earnings

The amounts of dividends or interest you earn should appear on your statements. Look for the dividends and interest section where TD Ameritrade list this information. If you see that you have earned any dividends or interest, ensure your broker credits those dividends and interest to your account.

Changes in the Value of Your Investments

  • Check your account statement: If you have the wrong balance, there may have been changes to the value of your investments. For example, if you bought a stock and the price has dropped, this could affect your balance.
  • Check your online portfolio: If you find recent updates or trades within your account, it may affect how much money is showing up. These transactions could be causing this discrepancy in your total assets.
  • Email from TD Ameritrade: If TD Ameritrade sends an email notifying you of any recent activity (such as purchasing stocks), check whether the records match up with what is showing on the website before contacting them.

Corporate Events or Changes in the Value of Your Investments

These could include stock splits and buybacks. While it doesn't often happen, a company may occasionally change its stock price without investors being aware. For example, if a company has no earning's growth but was valued at $20 per share before another company bought it at $10 per share -- it could instantly halve the value of shares.

Unfilled Orders

If you're sure you haven't made any mistakes, double-check your account summary to ensure there aren't any pending deposits or withdrawals. If there is, cancel it by calling the TD Ameritrade customer service department.

Double-check that the correct balance isn't on your Account Summary page. If you don't see an option for viewing your accounts simultaneously, click on each account. Click Account Detail to see what's going on with your portfolio.

A Recent Sale of Assets From the Account

Some transactions, such as selling a stock appear in your account immediately. Other trades may take up to three days to process. You can find this at the top of each page of your statement. Check for an error in transferring funds between accounts or between TD Ameritrade accounts and other financial institutions.

Deposits or Withdrawals

If you've made any deposits or withdrawals into your account recently, ensure the funds reflect in your balance.
