Introduction

Air Canada customers can get a baggage fee refund when their checked bag is delayed, cancelled, or damaged. To get a refund, customers must report lost/delayed/damaged baggage within 7 days, either at an Air Canada baggage counter or the airport's domestic baggage hall. Get your incident report number; you'll need it to process the refund. However, note that Air Canada will not refund checked bags with minor damage. Read the guide below, and we'll show you the steps on how to get an incident report number and process the refund.

Report Your Delayed Bag

All customers requesting a baggage fee refund must complete the form. However, you need to get an incident report number first before filling out the form. You have up to 7 days to report the missing or delayed bag. Visit the Bag Recovery page to get an incident report number. Just enter your booking reference and your last name, and click Search. Then follow the on-screen instructions for getting the incident report number. Note that you can also go directly to the airport to report your missing or delayed bag.

If your checked bag is damaged, proceed to the next step.

Go Back to the Airport

After getting your checked bag, it's always wise to inspect it to ensure there is no damage. Otherwise, you need to report it to Air Canada to get compensation. You have about 7 days to file a claim for a damaged checked bag. But first, go back to the airport and get an incident report number. You need this to process the claim.

Complete the Form

You need to complete the Baggage Fee Refund form to get a refund for the money you paid for your checked bag. Enter your incident report number (see the steps on how to get a report number) and fill out the passenger information. Please make sure the passenger's name, including the email address, is correct. Also make sure to fill out the flight information — you need the flight number, booking reference, flight date, and departure and arrival airports. If it's for damaged luggage, we encourage customers to add a photo or document before submitting the form.

Air Canada processes the refund within 30 calendar days. For domestic flights, it's possible to get a refund within 7 days for credit card payments. For other forms of payment, wait 20 calendar days.

Conclusion

Follow the steps above to report a delayed or damaged checked bag and get a refund. However, if you purchased the baggage from a travel agency, call them directly. Air Canada doesn't process refunds on behalf of the travel agency. Use the steps above only when you purchased the tickets and baggage allowance directly from Air Canada, or when you bought the separate baggage allowance from Air Canada, or at the airport. Why does GetHuman Write How-to Guides for Air Canada Problems?

GetHuman has been working for over 10 years on sourcing information about big organizations like Comcast in order to help customers resolve customer service issues faster. We started with contact information and fastest ways to reach a human at big companies. Particularly ones with slow or complicated IVR or phone menu systems. Or companies that have self-serve help forums instead of a customer service department. From there, we realized that consumers still needed more detailed help solving the most common problems, so we expanded to this set of guides, which grows every day. And if you spot any issues with our What do I do if my Xfinity TV or internet is out? guide, please let us know by sending us feedback. We want to be as helpful as possible. If you appreciated this guide, please share it with your favorite people. Our free information and tools is powered by you, the customer. The more people that use it, the better it gets.
