Getting a health insurance policy is a must when it comes to taking care of yourself and your family. You have done your research, reviewed the insurance agencies in your area, and you've decided Aetna offers the best plan for your needs. How do you enroll with Aetna? You can get information and assistance by contacting Aetna customer service here, and below are ways you can enroll in an Aetna plan.

What to Consider When Picking a Plan

Aetna has a variety of plans to choose from, so you want to make sure you're getting the one that will best support your healthcare needs. Below are some things to consider:

  1. Is your current physician in-network with the Aetna plan you are considering? You can check online at Aetna's website to see if your doctor is in-network. If not, you will either pay out-of-network prices or have to switch to an in-network provider.
  2. How much are your annual healthcare costs? If you're in general good health, this will be a rough estimate to plan for any potential emergencies. If you have a chronic illness or take maintenance medications, you'll have a better idea of your overall annual costs.
  3. What coverage do you want? Do you need medical, dental, prescription coverage, Medicaid/Medicare? The type of coverage will determine which Aetna plan you apply for.
  4. Does your employer offer Aetna as a healthcare plan option? If your employer does, this will determine your monthly premiums and the types of coverage you can get.

How to Enroll

Once you have looked at all the plans Aetna has to offer, you are now ready to enroll. To enroll with Aetna, follow these steps:

  1. Make sure it is during the open enrollment period, which usually takes place from November 1 to mid-January each year.
  2. If it isn't open enrollment, you can still add healthcare coverage if you have a qualifying life event. Qualifying life events include:
    • You are aging out of your parent's healthcare plan.
    • Your spouse has passed away and you were on your spouse's healthcare policy.
    • You are adding a baby or child to your family via birth or adoption.
    • When you move to another state, you can switch healthcare plans.
    • If you are covered on your spouse's policy, and you divorce, you can enroll in your own healthcare plan.
  3. Go to Aetna's website and click on "Shop for a Plan."
  4. In the drop-down menu, choose the type of plan you wish to purchase. The various plans include:
    • Medicaid
    • Individual and Family Plans
    • Medicare
    • Dental
    • Prescription
  5. Click on "Explore Plans."
  6. If Aetna covers your area, you will be shown the various plans available.
  7. Select the exact plan you want, and enter your personal data.
  8. Select payment options and confirm your request.
