I am exceedingly irritated having visited Waitrose in Cheltenham this morning. **I dropped two of my children at school (ages ** and **) at *am and went straight to Waitrose with my ** year old daughter to do some shopping for the weekend. We used our card and the scanning machine (as we often do) and filled our bags with shopping. In amongst my shopping was paracetamol and a bottle of vodka. I obviously knew I would have to be age checked at the checkout machines. When I got to there, the checkout supervisor (a lady) came over to age check me. I will be honest here - I was ** this week and even on a really good day, no-one would mistake me for being under **. She looked at me, looked at my daughter and asked for ID. *Me: You are joking aren't you?*Then she saw we had paracetamol and agreed that was fine. But then she spotted the vodka:*Her: Ah - you have alcohol - I will need to see ID for her (indicating my daughter). *I could not believe it. I explained to her that my daughter was, in fact, ** but that was irrelevant because it was me buying it.*Her: Yes - but you could be buying it for her. *Me: What would happen if I was shopping with a five year old - would I be allowed to buy vodka then? *Her: Yes - no problem because a five year old is clearly a minor. *Me: OK - so let's be clear here - I need to understand what you are telling me. What would happen if I was shipping with my ** year old daughter?*Her: I would need to see ID. *Me: Why? Apart from the fact that she would clearly not have ID at **, what good would that do? It would simply demonstrate that she was ** and under age - I could still be buying it for her. Would you refuse to sell me alcohol if I was shopping with her?*Her: Um yes - it is a grey area.*Me: It is ridiculous - I have never heard anything like it. I am ** years old and should be able to buy whatever I like. *She mumbled something I did not catch and approved my purchase and left.**So - after all that I was able to buy the vodka. So what actually are the rules here? **I left the shop absolutely fuming!**By all means challenge people who might be under age but if they can demonstrate their age, surely you have to let them buy it?**A friend of mine told me last week that she had sent her ** year old son to Waitrose in Cirencester a couple of weeks ago because her and her husband had finished a bottle of wine and wanted another. Her ** year old son took his little brother with him and they refused to serve him using very similar reasoning. They told him he could be buying it for his young friend. He explained that was his little brother (the child in question is **) but they would not let him buy it. He went elsewhere and was served without a fuss. When she told me what had happened I was astonished.... and now it has happened to me and I am **!**Am I really only allowed to buy alcohol in Waitrose if I shop alone? I have never heard such rubbish. Has Waitrose really become its own Nanny State?**Do I need to start shopping elsewhere too?
