Mr Roberts**I was recently shopping at my local Sainsbury in the Galleries, Washington when I heard a new tannoy announcement .... "covid marshals are patrolling the store issuing fines".**You are no doubt aware that covid marshals have no legal powers to issue fines, as outlined below on the official government website and on the local Sunderland Council website.**"The role of COVID-** secure marshals or equivalents such as wardens, stewards and ambassadors is not to enforce COVID-** regulations, or have any enforcement powers, which should remain the remit of the police and designated local authority compliance and enforcement officers." https:**www.gov.uk*government*publications*covid-**-local-authority-compliance-and-enforcement-grant*guidance-to-support-local-authority-compliance-and-enforcement-activity-including-covid-**-secure-marshals-or-equivalents**"Their role is an advisory rather than an enforcement one." https:**www.sunderland.gov.uk*article*******Covid-marshals-on-hand-to-offer-advice-to-shoppers-across-Sunderland**The announcement was clearly intended to be threatening, to induce fear in people, and to employ coercion in order to control your paying customers* and whilst you have no ground in law to do so, I don't wish to be shopping in a store where people are walking around issuing fines and hunting down customers to fine. Although they have no legal powers, it could result in an unpleasant confrontation if one had to explain to over-zealous, misinformed staff that the they have no legal powers to issue fines.**Your staff member's saccharin-sweet delivery of that Orwellian announcement, where staff think it is okay to threaten paying customers has left us with the impression that it would be easy to get fined if you shop at Sainsburys, even when complying with the measures, as there is a culture of mis-information and overreaching, adding even more 'rules' to the already draconian guidance.**It is deeply unpleasant to be out and about these days, but to be out buying your essentials and to hear that covid marshals are "patrolling the store issuing fines" is the last straw. The intimidating nature of Sainsburys heavy-handed response means that myself and my family will no longer be coming into Sainsburys stores and will in future shop with supermarket chains which do not threaten their customers.
GetHuman-myhighpl did not yet indicate what Sainsbury's should do to make this right.
