The issue in GetHuman-montwila's own words
While mowing JD E*** Stopped with a loud noise. No prior warning and nothing was struck in the yard. Mower engine (** HP) was stopped and could net be turned with the starter. After manipulating the belt pulley below engine back and forth, eventually the starter is able to rotate engine but sounds like no fuel or spark. Just rotates. Engine can be turned in both directions using the belt pulley below.**Does this engine have valves where it could have thrown a valve or possibly a broken cranKshaft. Should the engine be able to be turned in either direction with the belt pulley?

GetHuman-montwila did not yet indicate what John Deere should do to make this right.
