Hi, **I have a ****-R with $*** in box * and *a. This is an amount of money paid by me through my employer into a teacher pension account in Illinois that was discontinued and paid back to employees as a Retirement Excess Contribution Refund. I will include the original statement about this refund below if it's not clear what this is.**We were required to rollover the refund into another account or take the amount and pay the tax on it. I had the refund sent to a Roth IRA account that I opened, so I believe I still have to pay the tax on it. I'm unclear on where to claim this on the ****. I thought line *b, but after reading *b instructions as well as publication *** and ***, I'm really not sure. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. **Thanks for everything, **Mike Data**Original statement about the Refund from Illinois:*If you contribute to the Teachers Retirement System (TRS), you have probably heard that the Early Retirement Option (ERO), which allowed teachers to retire before age ** without incurring a penalty, recently expired because the legislature did not extend the program. This is a big change, and there has been some misinformation about how it will affect TRS members. The IFT wants to help you understand the facts. **Here’s what you should know.* *Your paycheck*Since ****, *.*% of your total *.*% pension contribution has gone to fund the ERO program. On July *, **** the program ended, and the *.*% contribution was eliminated. This reduction in contribution could have an impact on your paycheck going forward, depending on your collective bargaining agreement. * *Your refund*TRS members are also eligible to receive a refund of any ERO contributions they made since ****. Refund amounts will vary significantly based on each participant’s salary and how many years the employee paid the ERO contribution. TRS has said that they will not be able to estimate each member’s potential refund until the fall of ****, after all employer Annual Reports are processed. * *Employees will have the option to receive a refund by check, roll the money (tax-free) into a qualified non-TRS retirement plan, or leave the money with TRS, where no interest will accrue. By law, TRS has *** days after July *, ****, to make the application for refund available. Refunds will begin processing after the first of the year (****).
