My daughter and I are devastated. We made plans to take a vacation together - my first in * years - and the first thing we did was book a private sleeper room on the Coast Starlight *** train from Sacramento, CA to Seattle WA. I made the reservation back in February of ****, and even paid the additional amount for the recommended travel insurance. Last Friday, one week before our trip is scheduled to take place, I get a call saying our train has been cancelled. I called and the service rep I spoke to said it may not be after all--to call back Monday or Tuesday to see if there is more information. On Monday the rep I spoke to said she didn't think there was any way it was going to take place. I asked to speak to customer service and she transferred me, but I gave up after being on hold half an hour with no answer (during business hours).**Had I booked a flight instead of the train at the time I made that initial booking it would have cost me *** less, but we both really wanted this experience. Now I've been forced to book a flight at roughly the same cost as my nearly $*** train fare due to the last minute nature of the notification I received from Amtrak, and to add insult to injury, even if I cancel my Amtrak reservation and receive a refund, I will still be out the travel insurance cost, through no fault of my own.**This is a terrible way to treat your customers and a truly sad start to our long anticipated trip. I would appreciate a response back as far as why we weren't informed much sooner so we could have potentially made less expensive alternate arrangements* at a minimum, we should have been informed early on of the potential for delay so we could have weighed our options. I would also like to know of the potential for any sort of restitution towards a future trip, since despite all of this we still would like to take that route and experience the sleeper room option.
GetHuman-ggsimm did not yet indicate what Amtrak should do to make this right.
