How Do I Apply for Unemployment Benefits with the South Dakota Department of Labor and Regulation?

A resident of South Dakota may come to a point in time where they would like to apply for unemployment benefits with the Department of Labor and Regulation. If you are at that point in time now, we are here to help. Below is a thorough, simple guide on how to submit your application. We are here to help you! Are you ready to begin? Excellent. Let's get started:

1. You are required to have earned at least $728 in your base period's highest quarter in South Dakota. You also must have earnings that amount to a minimum of 20 times your weekly benefit amount during across three base period quarters to qualify.

2. You can receive a maximum of $414 in unemployment benefits in South Dakota. The least you can receive is $28. To calculate the amount you will receive, you take 1/26th the amount of wages you earned during the best quarter of your base period.

3. In South Dakota, you can collect unemployment benefits for up to 26 weeks. The CARES Act that was recently passed by the federal government extends that by an additional 13 weeks.

4. If you lost your job and it wasn't because of something that was your fault, you are eligible for unemployment benefits in the state of South Dakota. This means you shouldn't have lost your job because you were late to work a lot, or for a similar reason.

5. If you would like to apply for unemployment benefits, please collect all of the items in this list: the address where you get your mail, your previous employer's contact number, the specific reason you lost your job, your email, your phone number, your social security number, your checking or your savings account information if you would like to be paid via direct deposit, your most recent wage information, complete employment history for the last 18 months, home address, your state driver's license number or your identification number, DD Form number 214 (if you were in the military within the last 2 years), information on any severance pay you may have received (if that is applicable), and an alien identification number or registration number (if you're a non-US citizen).

6. You will be eligible to call the South Dakota Claims Center or apply on the Department of Labor and Regulation's website after you have collected all of the items listed above.

7. If you are denied benefits, you have the ability to file an appeal within 15 days of the mailing date of the "determination notice" letter that South Dakota mailed to you notifying you of the denial.

8. If you would like more detailed assistance with your application, please visit our contact page for the South Dakota Department of Labor and Regulation. We will put you in touch with a human there that can help.

Why does GetHuman Write How-to Guides for South Dakota Department of Labor and Regulation Problems?

GetHuman has been working for over 10 years on sourcing information about big organizations like Comcast in order to help customers resolve customer service issues faster. We started with contact information and fastest ways to reach a human at big companies. Particularly ones with slow or complicated IVR or phone menu systems. Or companies that have self-serve help forums instead of a customer service department. From there, we realized that consumers still needed more detailed help solving the most common problems, so we expanded to this set of guides, which grows every day. And if you spot any issues with our What do I do if my Xfinity TV or internet is out? guide, please let us know by sending us feedback. We want to be as helpful as possible. If you appreciated this guide, please share it with your favorite people. Our free information and tools is powered by you, the customer. The more people that use it, the better it gets.
