Reading an electric meter is a simple process that allows customers to understand their energy consumption. Most electric meters in use today are digital or analog. For digital meters, you will see a numerical display that indicates your energy usage in kilowatt-hours, or kWh. The reading is straightforward; you simply read the numbers as they appear.
For analog meters, which have dial displays, you will find a series of dials, typically four or five, counting from left to right. Each dial represents a different digit in the meter reading. To read the dials, begin with the leftmost dial. If the pointer is between two numbers, record the lower number. If the pointer is directly on a number, check the next dial to the right. If it is on a higher number, you will record the lower number for the dial you are reading. Continue this process across all dials until you have the complete reading.
