In [redacted], my husband and I resided and worked in Missouri before retiring there. In [redacted], we relocated to North Carolina. Our sole sources of income are Social Security and retirement benefits from former jobs, none of which were earned in North Carolina. As I prepare our state tax return, I am puzzled why North Carolina states that we owe $[redacted].00 in state income taxes. I would appreciate clarification on this matter.

I have some inquiries about my tax return. Are there any restrictions on deductions for contributions (federal limit being 50% of AGI)? How can I modify my NC tax return from the previous year if I already used 50% of AGI for deductions? Can professional development expenses (as a teacher) be deducted? Can interest and fees paid to enhance our interest and annuity gains be deducted? Appreciate your assistance!

I recently received a notice about owing $61.41 in collections, which confuses me. I paid my [redacted] state tax of $2,[redacted].00 to the Department of Revenue. I've been working since [redacted] and pay my state taxes yearly. This notice and the strange phone call from 1-[redacted] offering prizes like a shopping spree at Walmart and car repairs at a discount seem suspicious. Is this a scam? I've been receiving these notices since [redacted]. Please contact me via email promptly.

I recently received a letter from Sharon Little, Revenue Tax Auditor I, regarding taxes owed for an ATV purchased in Virginia in [redacted]. I phoned her and explained we had already paid NC tax, offering to scan and email her the buyer's order. Sharon promptly responded, confirming the issue was resolved. The exceptional service from Sharon was a pleasant surprise compared to past experiences with the NC Dept. of Revenue. Her assistance and positive attitude truly made a difference. Sharon deserves recognition for her outstanding help and attitude. Thank you, Sharon, for your exceptional assistance!

Hello, my name is J.M. I recently filed my taxes electronically but it seems my refund is taking longer than expected. I am eagerly awaiting the funds due to a change in my financial situation. Can you provide an estimate of when I can expect to receive my refund? Thank you for your assistance in resolving this matter promptly.

My spouse and I have recently separated, and I relocated from North Carolina to New Jersey. Despite the lack of communication with my spouse, our [redacted] taxes were prepared by Liberty Tax when we were still married. Following federal tax changes, I requested Liberty Tax to amend our filing status to married but separated, resulting in a federal refund. Subsequently, I asked them to do the same for my North Carolina state taxes, which they assured would also lead to a refund. However, upon receiving the tax documents tonight, I found that they were still addressed to both of us at my current address in Trenton, NJ. I reiterated that we are separated. Why wasn't the revised [redacted] tax return Liberty Tax submitted to the Wilmington, NC office accepted? I have received the federal refund already. I need clarification on this matter.

A corporation based in California operates a retail store in North Carolina. Due to continuous losses, the corporation filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy in Federal Bankruptcy court and was discharged from its debts. According to Federal Tax Law, the corporation must report the income from debt cancellation on Form [redacted]. I am seeking advice on how to address this for North Carolina State Income Tax purposes. Please assist me via email at [redacted] or on cell at [redacted]. I would greatly appreciate a prompt response. Thank you. - Young Park

As the executor of my grandfather's estate, I submitted his [redacted] taxes on March 15, [redacted]. A few months later, in June, I received a 5071C letter. Despite numerous calls and sending duplicate forms 56 and [redacted], the forms were not on file until I had an appointment at the Charlotte, NC office on December 20th. Although the forms were not on record, the staff scanned everything and scheduled another verification appointment for mid-January. After confirming ID in January, I was informed I should expect the federal refund within 12 weeks. While I received the federal refund in April, I am still waiting for the $[redacted] state refund. The taxpayer assistance line claims the check was mailed on May 13, [redacted], but it has not arrived. The state IRS customer service states the state refund is still processing, hindering the closure of the estate. I seek guidance on how to resolve this matter promptly.
