An Upwork account gives you access to thousands of job opportunities around the world. You may also create a business account with Upwork to help you look for freelancers online. Creating an account only takes a few steps. In this article, we'll discuss how to get started as a freelancer on Upwork. 

Getting Started With Upwork

You can create an account with Upwork using your Apple or Google account. There is no need to create a username and password for this. Another way is to use a preferred email address. Below are the steps to create an Upwork account:

  1. Visit the Upwork homepage. 
  2. Select Continue with Google if you want to use your Google account. 
  3. Select Continue with Apple if you want to use your Apple account. 
  4. Enter your email address in the Work field if you'd rather use a personal or work email address to set up your account. 
  5. Add your personal information, including your location. 
  6. Indicate that you want to "Work as a freelancer" and agree to Upwork's Terms of Service, Privacy Policy and User Agreement. 
  7. Click Create My Account

Completing Your Profile

Upwork requires its users to finish at least 60% of their Upwork profile before they can start applying for jobs. To increase your chances of getting your dream job on Upwork, it's advised to complete 100% of your profile. 

Provide the essentials, such as a professional photo of yourself, your job title, your overview, work experiences and at least one skill. Choose at least 10 skills from the list to get more job recommendations. Just follow the on-screen instructions to complete your work profile with Upwork. 

The next step is to highlight your educational background. Add any degree you've earned and your area of study. If you've received school awards, include this as well. 

Don't forget to include your past work experiences because clients will most likely look at them to determine if you're fit for the job. Be as detailed as possible when adding past work experiences with Upwork. You may want to also include projects you've done on other freelancing sites. If you have a portfolio online, consider including them. 

Write a Good Title and Overview

An enticing title and overview can help you win clients on Upwork. Keep it short and specific as much as possible. You might want to include keywords your clients might look for so that clients can also see your profiles when they look for freelancers on the platform. 

Don't forget to include your contact details, phone number and physical address to get accepted by Upwork. You will also be asked to provide a valid government-issued ID and complete an online visual verification before you can apply for jobs.
