How to Set Up Sales Tax with Squarespace?

If you are using Squarespace to make and host a commercial site then you need to learn how to set tax rates for your customers' purchases. You can set tax rates by U.S. ZIP code, by Canadian province, and by country. Options for different ways taxes appear on your customers' invoices are available.

If you run your own business, you may be using Squarespace to manage your online sales. After all, it makes setting up and managing a commercial website rather easy, even for people with no knowledge of the subject. If you do, you need to learn how to set up sales tax rates for your site. Just keep reading to learn how.

Squarespace Tax Information

You can set tax rates for customers from specific ZIP codes in the United States, from provinces in Canada, and from other countries. You can't set different tax rates for different products. Your customers' billing addresses will determine the tax rate for service and digital purchases. Their shipping addresses will determine the rate for purchases of physical products. Taxes aren't applied to purchases of gift cards and donations.

Adding Tax Rates for U.S. ZIP Codes

To add tax rates for specific ZIP codes in the U.S., follow these steps:

  1. Select Commerce from the Home menu.
  2. Click on Taxes.
  3. Click on Add Rate under the Manual Setup header.
  4. Select the U.S. from the Country menu.
  5. Click on Select State.
  6. Click on Add ZIP Code Rate.
  7. Click on ZIP Code to add a rate for one ZIP code or click on ZIP Range to add a rate for more than one.
  8. Add the ZIP code if you clicked on ZIP Code, add the first and last ZIP codes if you clicked on ZIP Range.
  9. Enter the tax rate.
  10. Click on Add if you clicked on ZIP Code or Apply if you clicked on ZIP Range.
  11. Click on Save.

Adding Tax Rates for Canadian Provinces

To add tax rates for Canadian provinces, follow steps 1 to 3 from the procedure above then follow these instructions:

  1. Select Canada from the Country menu.
  2. Click on Add Province Rate.
  3. Click on Select a Province.
  4. Choose a province.
  5. Enter the tax rate for that province.
  6. Select Charge Taxes on Member Areas and Services if you are required to charge that tax.
  7. Select Charge Tax on Shipping if you are required to tax shipping.
  8. Select Show as Combined Rate on Invoice if that is how you wish the taxes to appear.
  9. Click on Add.
  10. Click on Save.

Adding Tax Rates for other Countries

To set a tax rate for other countries, follow steps 1 to 3 from the instructions for setting U.S. tax rates then follow these steps:

  1. Click on Next.
  2. Enter the name of the tax you are charging.
  3. Enter the tax rate.
  4. Select Charge Taxes on Member Areas and Services if required.
  5. Select Charge Tax on Shipping if required.
  6. Select Show as Combined Rate on Invoice if that is how you wish the taxes to appear.
  7. Click on Add.
  8. Click on Save.
