Applying for unemployment benefits with the New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions doesn't have to be confusing or complicated. This guide will give you an overview of what you need and how to apply.

Who Qualifies?
1. Those who lost their employment, or had their hours reduced, through no fault of their own.
2. Those who earned enough income during what's referred to as the base period.
3. Those who are willing and able to work.
4. Those who are looking for work.

What You Need
1. It's important to file the same week that you became unemployed or partially employed. Your claim is effective the Sunday of the week you file.
2. Your social security number
3. Your 18-month work history including names, addresses, and phone numbers of previous employers, start and end dates, and reason no longer employed. Also include your gross pay if you worked during your filing week.
4. Non-U.S. citizens need their alien registration number and expiration date.
5. Paper and pen or pencil to write down questions and instructions.

How to File Online
1. To file online, go to www.dws.state.nm.us, click on individual, and create an account if you don't have one. Please note the system does allow you to explore some features of the site as a guest but you will need to create a username and password to apply for benefits.
2. After logging in, go to the Quick Menu on the left side of the page and select Unemployment Insurance. Follow the site prompts to fill out your application for benefits. This should take at least 30 minutes.
3. Please note, the online system isn't available on Saturdays due to scheduled maintenance, but it is accessible Sundays through Fridays from 4 a.m. until 9 p.m.

How to File By Phone
1. If you file by phone, UI representatives are available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. You can also certify your payments weekly but there is a call in schedule based on the last digit of your social security number for that purpose.
a. Mondays are for 0-3
b. Tuesdays are designated for 4-6
c. Wednesdays are for 7-9
d. Thursdays and Fridays are make-up days in case you missed your day to call.
