How Do I Buy Options on Interactive Brokers?

Interactive Brokers is a popular online brokerage platform offering stocks, futures and options. Options trading helps investors looking to hedge their portfolios, generate income, or speculate on market movements. We'll look at how to buy options on Interactive Brokers, from setting up your account to executing your first trade.

Steps to Buy Options on Interactive Brokers

Buying options is a straightforward process comprised of these steps:

1. Setting Up Your Interactive Brokers Account

You need an account to start trading options on Interactive Brokers. To do this:

  • Visit the Interactive Brokers website.

  • Click the "Open Account" button. You'll be asked for personal information including your name, address and Social Security number.

  • Additionally, you'll need to answer questions about your financial situation, investment experience and risk tolerance. This information helps Interactive Brokers determine the appropriate trading permissions for your account.

You need to fund your account once set up. Interactive Brokers offers several funding options, including wire transfers, ACH transfers and check deposits. Choose the most convenient method and follow the instructions provided by the platform.

2. Requesting Options Trading Permissions

Before trading options on Interactive Brokers, you must request options trading permissions. To do this:

  • Log in and open the "Settings" menu in your account.

  • From there, click "Account Settings" and "Trading Permissions." You'll see a list of available trading instruments, including options.

  • Click the "Edit" button next to the options and follow the prompts to request trading permissions.

Interactive Brokers will review your request and may ask for additional information or documentation. Once approved, you'll receive a notification and options trading will be enabled on your account.

3. Finding and Analyzing Options

To find options for a specific stock or ETF, enter the ticker symbol in the quote monitor and press enter. This will display the underlying asset's price and other relevant information. Next, open the options chain by clicking on the "Options" tab in the quote monitor.

The options chain displays all options contracts for the underlying asset, organized by expiration date and strike price. You can use the options chain to analyze various strategies and identify the contracts you want to trade.

4. Placing an Options Order

Once you've identified the options contract you'd like to buy, it's time to place an order. To do this, click the "Ask" price for the contract in the options chain. This will open the order entry panel with the contract details pre-filled.

In the order entry panel, you can specify the order type (e.g., limit or market), the number of contracts you'd like to buy, and the price you're willing to pay (for limit orders). Once you've entered this information, click the "Submit" button to send your order to the market.

5. Monitoring and Managing Your Options Positions

After you've executed your options trade, it's essential to monitor and manage your position. You can do this using the "Portfolio" tab in TWS, which displays your current holdings and their performance. If you need to close or adjust your options position, place a new order in the order entry panel.

Why does GetHuman Write How-to Guides for Interactive Brokers Problems?

GetHuman has been working for over 10 years on sourcing information about big organizations like Comcast in order to help customers resolve customer service issues faster. We started with contact information and fastest ways to reach a human at big companies. Particularly ones with slow or complicated IVR or phone menu systems. Or companies that have self-serve help forums instead of a customer service department. From there, we realized that consumers still needed more detailed help solving the most common problems, so we expanded to this set of guides, which grows every day. And if you spot any issues with our What do I do if my Xfinity TV or internet is out? guide, please let us know by sending us feedback. We want to be as helpful as possible. If you appreciated this guide, please share it with your favorite people. Our free information and tools is powered by you, the customer. The more people that use it, the better it gets.
