How Do I Reset My D-Link Systems Router's Password?

If you suspect someone has been accessing your D-Link router without your permission, you need to reset your router's password. This should be easy to do, unless the router has had its default password reset already and you don't have it. If that is the case, you will first need to reset the router to its default factory settings and then change the password.

If you think that someone has been accessing your D-Link System's router without your permission, you should change your router's password for security reasons. Keep reading to learn how.

Resetting Your D-Link Router's Password

To reset your router's password, follow these instructions:

  1. Open a web browser.
  2. Enter your router's IP address in the navigation bar. If you do not know your router's IP address, try 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1, which are common D-Link IP addresses. If neither of those work, enter http://dlinkrouter.local.
  3. Enter your username.
  4. Enter your administrator password.
  5. Click on the Wireless tab, or the Settings tab and then Wireless Settings, if there is no Wireless tab.
  6. Enter the new password in the password text field.
  7. Confirm the password.
  8. Click on the Save button.

Once you have taken these steps, all of your wireless devices will be disconnected from the internet. You will need to update each of them with the new password to get them connected again.

Resetting Your D-Link Router's Password without the Login Information

If you don't have an administrator username and password for your router, try using "admin" for the username and leaving the password field blank. This is the most common default setting for D-Link routers. If that doesn't work, try using "admin" for both the username and the password. If neither of these options work, look in your router manual to see if it lists a special default password for your router. If none of those options work, you're going to have to do a hard reset of the router. To do that, just follow these instructions:

  1. Open a web browser on a computer that is connected to the router with an Ethernet cable, because wireless connections will be lost when the router updates its password.
  2. Partially unbend a paperclip so you have a short straight length.
  3. Locate the reset button on the back of your router. It should be a small button in a deep recess, so that it can't accidentally be pressed.
  4. Push the button by poking the paperclip into the recess and hold it down for 5 seconds or so, until the router's lights blink to indicate that it's been reset to the factory settings.
  5. Follow steps 2 through 8 of the instructions above, using the suggestions for default usernames and passwords given in this section.
