No, you do not need to be home for your new service to be connected. Ameren Illinois can usually perform this service without entering your home, as long as they have access to the meter. However, if internal access is required (such as for a safety inspection), they’ll coordinate with you to find a time when you or another adult can be present.

To find out the amount you owe on an old account, you'll need to reach out to Ameren Illinois directly. They maintain accurate records of your past accounts and they are the only ones able to give you this information. Due to customer privacy regulations, Ameren cannot release this information without verifying your identity. It's also worth noting that if the account is several years old, it might have been sent to a collections agency, which Ameren can help you track down.
