The busiest times are when the most people are calling this Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (DMV/RMV) phone number (least busy times have fewer people calling). This high call volume does not necessarily mean that you will have a long hold time when you call. My Experience Calling Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (DMV/RMV) at this Number

Sep 22, 2023

Calling this phone number doesn't seem to be effective, even though it's listed as an official number on the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration's website. When I dialed this number on three separate occasions, I got a busy signal each time. There wasn't any kind of notification that I'd reached the Maryland MVA, no wait time to speak to a representative, and no menu to get me to a place where I could get more information.

After having problems on the first two occasions, I checked to confirm that this was a legitimate Maryland MVA phone number. Going to the website does confirm that this is supposed to be a number for the call center for the Maryland MVA, and clicking around to other pages revealed the same information.

Given that, it seems incomprehensible that this number wouldn't be set up properly to receive calls or at least direct callers to where they could get information. If the MVA wanted to direct callers onto their website, they could at least offer information about how to get to the website, or provide a text message with a link to the site.

Maryland isn't a particularly rural state, so it's not as necessary for a call center to have a constant presence available. But if the state is going to have one, it should at least be able to accept calls and place customers on hold, or tell them that their call cannot be accepted at this time because of call volume. If this number is no longer working, the state needs to do something to tell people that.

Given that this is one of two possible numbers for the Maryland MVA call center, it's possible that the other number works fine and this number is superfluous. However, seeing as this is the number with a Maryland area code of the two, this is the number that more people are likely to call. With it apparently not working properly, Maryland residents with a MVA issue are left to either try the other number or dial this one and hope that they get connected. The website doesn't list any hours of operation, so if this number ever does work, there's no way to know if you're actually going to get connected or not.

Overall, this number doesn't seem to be in operation, and if it is, it's not working the way it should. I would not recommend trying this number if I had an issue concerning the Maryland MVA.
