Michigan Secretary of State Customer FAQ

If you have a foreign driver's license and it's not in English, the Michigan Secretary of State requires it to be translated. The translation must be complete, accurate, and done by a certified translator. The translated document should be carried with the original license at all times when driving. Please remember that international visitors can use their foreign license for up to one year in Michigan. After that, they need to apply for a Michigan driver's license. Keep in mind that regulations can change, so it's always good to confirm the current policy directly with the Michigan Secretary of State.

You can renew your vehicle's registration (tabs) through the Michigan Secretary of State's online services, by mail, or in-person at a branch office. For online renewal, go to the Secretary of State eServices website, enter your plate number and the last four digits of your VIN, and follow the instructions. If renewing by mail, send your renewal notice and payment to the address on the notice. If you did not receive a renewal notice, you can still renew in person by taking your vehicle's registration or license plate number to any Secretary of State branch office.
